It’s been said by a few people--who the first was, I haven’t the slightest idea--that search engine optimization (SEO) is both an art and a science. Hats off to whoever coined that one, because I think they’re onto something.
We’re going to take a couple of blog posts to examine why that’s true. As Nashville is nothing if not a city of artists, let’s start with the art side of the equation.
4 Reasons Why SEO Is an Art
- Trend toward personalized search engine results. As Google continues to place more and more importance on mobile usage and personalized, localized search results, it means that one-size-fits-all SEO services just don’t work anymore. What is successful in Murfreesboro may not be successful in Nashville, and vice versa.
Increase of personal privacy. Google continues to hide more and more of their users’ data and search habits from digital marketing and analytics folks like us. This, in my opinion as a consumer, is great news. But from a marketing standpoint, it introduces some mystery and guesswork back into the search engine optimization equation.
The mysterious ways of Google. Google isn’t particularly forthcoming about the ins and outs of how their systems work. And even when they come out and say, “Don’t do THIS,” they don’t always act on those threats. I’ve seen many websites dominate the search engine rankings by using tactics that I would consider SEO spam. We’ll just hope those sites get their just deserts at some point…
The goal is to please humans, not algorithms. Some SEO companies get so caught up in getting in Google’s good graces that they lose sight of the fact that the end goal always revolves around interaction with a human. We would rather craft great content and a great experience for users, and optimize it in a way that keeps Google happy as well.
